The engraved t.p. by Cherubino Alberti is the same as that of the 1583 1st ed., with changes to the text and substitution of the arms of Marcantonio Borghese, to whom the ed. is dedicated. Engraved and woodcut ill., including 8 full-page engravings and 1 woodcut. The engravings are by Vignola, the woodcuts by Danti; see R. Mortimer, Italian 16th cent., 538 (ed. of 1583). Printer's device at colophon (an eagle, with the initials AB for Antonio Blado). Decorated initials, head and tail pieces

The first 32 plates are close to Fowler's type A, the plates from the original ed. of 1563, but most differ in details from Fowler's description. Type A also comprises the later Roman eds. of Vaccarius (1607-1610) and Rossi (ca. 1617). The present ed. includes the seven plates of the "Porte di Michel Angelo" (nos. 38-44) and the plate of the five orders (no. 3), all of which probably first appeared in Orlandi's ed. of 1602; see Fowler. Place and date from Fowler. The 32 plates are type A in the Fowler table of editions, 1563-[1800]. In the Fowler entry it is suggested that there may have been two earlier issues of the first XXXII leaves only, in 1562 and 1563?, so the present copy may be 3rd issue

Engraved throughout. Architectural title leaf includes the arms of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, to whom the work is dedicated, and the half-length port. of Vignola facing to the viewer's right. Plates are printed on one side of the leaf only, and are arranged in pairs on a verso and the facing recto. The 5 leaves at the end are from the series of 7 "Porte di Michel Angelo." Over 3 of the doorways are inscriptions relating to the Farnese
